penaklukan motif

The title of our Summer/Monsoon 2027 collection translates to “the conquest of motif/motive”. Penaklukan comes from the root word takluk (to conquer, subdue, or master), which is derived from the Arabic ta’alluq (to bind or attach).

The word motif holds a double meaning: referring to decorative patterns and visual elements in art and textiles, but also to the motives and intentions behind our actions. Both the English words “motif” and “motive” share the same Latin root, movere (to move or set in motion).

Crafts at INKAA

At INKAA, we work with four types of artisanal crafts, all of which are practised across the east coast of peninsular Malaysia: batik print-making, batik block-making, mengkuang-weaving, and brassware-making.

A large part of our first collection is built around the wax-resistance method of batik printing. This was the primary method used in the printing of patterns on fabrics. All of the printed fabrics have also been hand-dyed.

For our bags and accessories, we have worked with artisans specialising in mengkuang-weaving and brassware-making. The tote bags in the collection are handwoven with mengkuang leaves, and the accessories and embellishments have been handcrafted with brass.
